- Client:Lussa Gin
As the first and only gin to come from Scotland’s Isle of Jura, Lussa Gin needed unique branding to match its unique offering – and to ensure it stood out in a highly competitive market. We created a handcrafted brand, including visual identity, bespoke illustrations, packaging design and a new website, and helped sales and production go through the roof.
Island love affair
Lussa Gin is the first and only gin to come from the Isle of Jura, off the west coast of Scotland. Established in 2015 by three women who have built their lives there, it was born out of their passion for the island – its people, wildlife, and raw natural beauty – and is made with botanicals grown and gathered on Jura itself.
Jura in a bottle
As far as briefs go, this was simplicity itself: ‘Jura in a bottle.’ In a booming gin market, naturally Lussa had to stand out from the crowd of small batch gins. The challenge was to bottle the spirit of the island, while acknowledging the hard work needed to harvest the authentic Scottish craft gin’s unique blend of botanicals.
The spirit of adventure
We wanted to highlight this unique proposition, capturing the essence of an authentic, homegrown island life, but one spearheaded by wilderness. We developed a colour palette that captures Jura’s vast and vibrant landscape: rust-hued bracken, lush green hills and dark peaty lochans. Then, to complement it, we created a bespoke series of traditional pen and ink-style drawings which lend themselves perfectly to a small-batch, handcrafted gin.
Once we had a visual style in place, we created bottle labels and packaging that blend rich, nature-infused colours with a handmade illustrative treatment. Different textures and finishes were combined to create a feeling of depth and tactility. The name was set in copper foil on a clear film label, while the slim paper label (that also features a handwritten batch number) was printed with an uncoated copper metallic ink – reflecting Jura’s wild heather and bracken landscapes.
The finishing touch was a simple bottle collar, custom-made at the Islay Woollen Mill and based on the tweed of the Ardlussa Estate where Lussa is based. We later went on to apply the distinctive treatment to different sized bottles and limited editions.
The unique look and feel also extends to the website. Using parallax scrolling, key locations and distilling processes are brought to life with copy, illustrations and photographs, diving into Lussa’s wild story (and even wilder landscapes). We also integrated an online shop, where Lussa Gin has been flying off the virtual shelves.
Toast of the town
Lussa Gin is now on batch 57, producing around 10,000 bottles a year of varying sizes. And it’s not just sales – Lussa’s awards shelf has been filling fast too, including a gold win for Spirits Artwork and Bottle Design, at the Design & Media awards in 2018.
